Overview
Dataw Island, near the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway in South Carolinas low-country, was an 18th century plantation. Today it’s a beautiful, private 870-acre community with marina, two championship golf courses, miles of bike paths, fitness and activity centers, along with access to the beach. Enjoy ballroom dancing, oil painting, conversational Spanish or join the Yacht Club. Dataw Island offers several levels of memberships including one for renters. A discovery package is also available.

Dataw Island is a lovely community. HOA fees are high, but the amenities are many. The hurricane season and traffic in nearby Beaufort are concerns.

I have visited Dataw and more than 150 other golf communities in the Southeast. Dataw’s fees are not at all out of line for a high-quality community with two excellent golf courses, plenty of other amenities, and located midway between an ocean beach and the charming town of Beaufort, less than a half hour from each. Dataw posts its fees which you can see for yourself here: https://www.dataw.com/files/2022%20Resident%20Membership%20Information.pdf. As for hurricanes, the strongest one, Gracie, made landfall as a Cat. 4 in 1959. Since then, Dataw has been no more exposed than any other locations on the Carolinas coasts. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give Dataw Island a solid 4.5, especially for golfers.
